When is a dental implant appropriate?

Dr Andrew Teakle looks at the process of placing dental implants

Every tooth in your mouth has an important job to do. When you lose a tooth, the teeth on either side, in front and behind that missing tooth, tend to collapse in and move into that space. It’s a little like pulling a book out of a bookshelf, except it happens much slower of course.

That is why it is appropriate to have a dental implant, any time you have lost a tooth or are about to lose a tooth. We want to replace missing teeth so that you can maintain your function and of course to keep the aesthetics up, to make you look beautiful!

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of dental implants has come down dramatically since the monopoly of even the last few years has been broken. There’s been a huge explosion of high quality implant makers from all around the world – and we have access to them here at Wickham Terrace Dental.

We are able to place your dental implant at much more affordable price than ever before. Plus we have our own in-house lab and that helps us to contain the costs.

Why have dental implants done in Australia rather than overseas?

Implantology is a surgical procedure. It’s a serious procedure. It’s important to do things in the most sterile environment that we possibly can.

At Wickham Terrace Dental we use the most up-to-date protocol to do our implants. This also requires coming back for reviews, maintenance, and there are several steps to the full implant procedure.

What are the stages in having a dental implant?

The first step in getting a dental implant is to have a consultation. Our team will have a look to see whether you have enough bone, and what your mouth is like overall, and make sure that your oral health is good. This is very important before we place the implant.

The second step is the surgical phase. This is where we put the titanium implant into your jaw bone to replace the root of the tooth that was lost. We then get you back for a review after a couple of weeks, take out any stitches, and make sure that things are healing fine.

Then there’s a waiting phase of about three months to six months where we let the bone work its magic and integrate with the titanium dental implant. We then get you back to do what’s called the second stage surgery, and then finally we fabricate a custom made crown which we match with the colour and shape of your existing teeth.
